Tip 3: Saving on Electricity

Electricity remains one of the least expensive and most widely used forms of energy in our world today. From coal powered plants to hydroelectric power and nuclear power production, the cost for electricity is a relative bargain for consumers.

This said, power bills are rising as well and demand continues to grow for electrical power. Simple actions can make a great dent in your power bill every month, and you might not even notice the difference in your living conditions.

This may be the simplest of all ways to save money and earthly resources.

  • Change your Thermostat. Whether you use electric heat or heat your home by another way, almost all of us cool our homes by the use of electric air conditioning. By simply changing our thermostat by a couple of degrees higher in the summer or a couple of degrees lower in the winter can yield significant savings on our power bills, even as much as 5% savings per degree change.
  • Turn Down your Water Heater. Water heaters use a great deal of power and keep water hot 24/7. The cost of keeping water hot is often the 2nd greatest expense in a family's household energy budget. Simply turning down the temperature on your hot water heater will use a great deal less energy and translate into signifigant savings for you.
  • Use CFL Light Bulbs. These are increasingly becoming mandatory in many countries. CFL's (Compact Florescent Light Bulbs) use only about 1/4th as much energy as traditional light bulbs. CFL's tend to cost about 5x as much as traditional bulbs, but they often last 7 times as long and save almost 10 times their cost over their life of use. Changing your lights bulbs to CFL's may be the quickest simplest way to save you money immediatly.
  • Add Insulation to your Home. A well insulated home uses less power. Insulation is relatively cheap and adding insulation to your attic and better sealing your doors and windows can save significant money over the years ahead.
  • Buy Effecient Appliances: When it comes time to replace your appliances, buy Energy Star (TM) appliances. These appliances use less power and offer increased effieiency and are widely available at almost everywhere that sells appliances.
  • Turn off the Lights. This is a simple step, but one often overlooked. It's easy to do and you can save 100% of the unused light costs by just turning off the lights in rooms when you're not using them!
